The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) released the report of the "Study Group on the Future of Logistics Bases" on September 9.
This report compiles discussions held four times since October 2024 to examine the ideal policy for logistics bases in light of changes such as evolving needs, aging assets, and the diversification of roles and supply methods as society faces the 2024 problem.
The report highlights several issues facing logistics bases, including:
• Optimizing the allocation of logistics bases.
• Adapting to changes in truck transportation (e.g., relay transportation).
• Addressing the aging of logistics bases.
• Tackling the shortage of supply at coastal logistics bases.
• Building consensus with local communities.
In light of these challenges, the government emphasized the need to "formulate a national policy on the development of logistics bases." This includes:
• Defining the roles expected of logistics bases in policy terms.
• Establishing guidelines for the location and development of logistics bases.
• Creating a system to monitor logistics bases and manage supply and demand.
The report also stresses the importance of involving local governments in developing core logistics bases that contribute to regional revitalization and new industry growth. Necessary support measures should be considered to facilitate this development.
For logistics bases related to the procurement of essential goods, the report calls for schemes involving local government participation and support measures to ensure the smooth development and reconstruction of multifunctional and cooperative logistics bases. This will help address the reconstruction of aging facilities and the supply of new ones.
