Research and Practice on Harassment Countermeasures: Integrating Psychology and AI

On the 26th, the Converging Technology Research Group held the “3rd Converging Technology Research Conference” at Toyo University’s Hakusan Campus and online.

Converging technology refers to the integration of multiple disciplines to achieve specific goals. Established in 2023, the research group aims to expand new research areas by combining digital technology and psychology, and to promote the practical application of psychological knowledge in society. The group is led by Professor Masayuki Kiryu of Toyo University’s Faculty of Sociology.

Professor Kiryu and Kyoko Shimada (Representative Director, Kokoro Balance Research Institute), both contributors to the “Good Relationships with Important Customers! Kasuhara Counseling Room” series in Monthly Real Estate Distribution, spoke at the conference.

Ms. Shimada’s lecture, “Applied Research and Practice of Psychology × AI in Countermeasures against Kasuhara,” highlighted that 94.2% of people experience mental or physical changes when subjected to harassment. She explained that stress after harassment arises from three main factors: (1) the harassment itself, (2) lack of support from others, and (3) feelings of inadequacy or self-blame.

To prevent harassment, responders need strong responsiveness and stress management skills—abilities that are often challenging for less experienced workers. To address this, the team developed a “Kasuhara Experience AI Tool” that uses psychology and generative AI to help users practice responding to harassment scenarios.

Sho Iwasaki of Fujitsu Corporation introduced the tool and shared results from demonstration experiments at call centers, showing that users who practiced with the tool improved their customer service scores.

The conference also featured lectures on five themes, including “Design of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy with a Focus on ‘Comprehensive Knowledge’” by Ms. Rieko Yamamoto, Senior Fellow at the Japan Science and Technology Agency.

In closing, Professor Kiryu remarked, “As our values around happiness evolve, we must ask ourselves, ‘What truly constitutes happiness?’ The ultimate goal of ‘comprehensive knowledge’ is to create new value by bringing together diverse perspectives and fostering the vitality of knowledge.”
