Monitoring elderly people living alone based on electricity data/R65

On the 1st, R65 Co., Ltd. (located in Suginami-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Ryo Yamamoto), specializing in supporting room searches for individuals aged 65 and above, announced a collaborative initiative with GDBL Co., Ltd. (located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Takao Hirai). Together, they will conduct a demonstration experiment for a new "monitoring service for elderly individuals living alone" utilizing power consumption data.

In October 2023, following the amendment of the Electricity Business Act in 2020, companies other than electric power providers became able to use power consumption data owned by transmission and distribution operators. This allows service providers to operate independently of specific electricity providers, addressing societal issues such as disaster response, monitoring of the elderly, and efforts toward decarbonization.

For this initiative, R65 has partnered with GDBL, established in April 2022 with investment from Tokyo Electric Power Grid Co., Ltd., Chubu Electric Power Co., Ltd., Kansai Electric Power Transmission & Distribution Co., Ltd., and NTT Data Corporation. GDBL is known for its decarbonization support app "ZeroCa" for individual users. The collaboration aims to conduct a demonstration experiment for elderly monitoring services in the Tokyo Electric Power, Chubu Electric Power, and Kansai Electric Power areas. The goal is to prevent incidents leading to properties becoming associated with "lonely deaths" and to promote a society where individuals can choose their preferred living arrangements regardless of age.

The monitoring service analyzes electricity usage data in 30-minute intervals obtained from smart meters to observe the daily activities of residents. In case of detecting data anomalies compared to normal behavior, the service will contact the individual or their family for a safety confirmation within 24 to 48 hours. The demonstration period is from December 2023 to March 2024, targeting 400 participants, including real estate companies (facility owners, management companies), residents (those being monitored), and monitors (family members, etc.). The service is provided free of charge.

Full-scale service provision is anticipated from April 2024 onwards.
